Relationships and Change - Week 41 Lesson 2: Fractions of Amounts

Lesson Objective: The students will be able to determine the fraction of a given amount (number). 


Warm-Up: 
  • Find the equivalent fractions 3/5 = ?/15 and 20/25 = 4/?
  • Simplify: 32/36 and 24/36

Step 1: Amount divided by the denominator. 
Step 2: Multiply the answer by the numerator. 

Examples:
Find 4/8 of 40
So if I want to find 4/8 of 40  the denominator is 8.
Step 1: 40 divided by 8 (denominator) (By doing this we have found ⅛)
Step 2: That answer is 5. Then multiply by 4 (numerator) by 5. 
Step 3: Write the answer
A: 20

Find 4/5 of 35.
Step 1: I divide 35 by 5.
Step 2: That answer is 7. Multiply by 4 (numerator) by 7. 
Step 3: Write the answer. 
A:28



Word Problem examples: 
There were 66 apples on the tree.  John eats 2/3 of them.  How many are left?

There are 60 people on the bus.  2/6 are children.  How many adults are there?

Jason sleeps for ¾ of every 24 hours.  How many hours is he awake for?

Jennifer eats 3/8 of the 32 biscuits in the tin. How many biscuits are left?
