Statistics and Probability (Time, Tables, & Diagrams) - Week 6: Lesson 1: Averages & Range

This week, we will be discussing how to find different types of averages from a set of data.

  • Mean - Medelvärde (add all the numbers and divide by the amount of elements/numbers in total)
  • Median - Median (the number in the middle of a set of numbers listed in ascending order)
  • Mode - Typvärde (the number that appears the most often (has the highest frequency) in a set of data (numbers)

*It is always easiest to order the numbers from least to greatest before calculating.

Example Videos:

Range - Värdemängd (the difference between the highest and lowest numbers in a set of data which is listed from least to greatest. Take the highest number and subtract the lowest number from it)

E.g. A marathon race was completed by 5 runners. What is the range of times given in hours below?
2,7 hr, 8,3 hr, 3,5 hr, 5,1 hr, 4,9 hr

1.Order the data from least to greatest: 2,7  3,5  4,9  5,1  8,3
2. Subtract the lowest number from the highest: 8,3 hr - 2,7 hr = 5,6 hr
Answer: The range is 5,6 hr

Statistics and Probability (Time, Tables, & Diagrams) - Week 6: Lesson 1: Review of Graphs

Today we will review the different types of graphs we have been working with.

Bar Chart (stapeldiagram) - a graph which uses bars to represent the frequency of the data. The length (or height) of the bar is proportional to the frequency. Bar charts are often used to display results of surveys or to compare quantities of different things.

Pie Graph (cirkeldiagram) - a type of graph in which a circle is divided into sectors that each represent a proportion (percent/fraction/decimal) of the whole. The whole circle represents 100%. Pie graphs are also used to display results of surveys or to compare quantities of different things.

Line Graph (linjediagram) -  a type of graph which displays information as a series of data points connected by straight line segments. Line graphs show how something changes over time (temperature, rainfall, a person's height, etc.)

When we draw bar charts and line graphs, we use STOLAR to remember all of the components; scale, title, origin, labels, arrows, and ruler.
