Centralt innehåll

Properties of material

Metals, textiles and wood. Properties of materials, their areas of use and how they can be combined.

Tools and instruments

Hand tools, instruments and machines, what they are called and how they are used in a safe and appropriate way.

Handicraft techniques

Some forms of handicraft techniques, such as crochet and hollowing out materials. Concepts which are used in connection with the different techniques.

Sketches and work desc.

Two and three-dimensional sketches, models, patterns and task descriptions, and how they can be interpreted, followed and linked to mathematical calculations.

Crafts process

Different parts of the crafts process: the development of ideas, re ecting on important factors, communicating and assessing the work process. How different parts of the work process are interlinked.

Exploring opportunities

Exploring the opportunities provided by different materials and handicraft techniques.

How the assessment/s within the unit will be completed:

Projects will be assessed using a provided rubric that ties to the craft knowledge requirements.

Kunskapskrav

Based on the aim of the craft task and some environmental aspects, pupils choose their approaches, and give well developed reasoning for their choices.

During the work process, pupils formulate and choose action alternatives that lead to improvements.

In their work with some techniques in handicrafts, pupils can use hand tools, instruments and machines in a safe and appropriate way.

Pupils can make well developed assessments of their flown work and how it has affected the quality of their production.

Pupils in a well developed and systematic way can give form to and produce simple craft artefacts in different materials based on instructions.

Pupils in their work can develop ideas in interaction with inspirational material provided and using materials they have themselves obtained.

Wooden Games Day 1

Students will begin to design their own Tic Tac Toe game and Triangle Peg Game.

The following design tools will be used:

Ruler

Try Square

Pencil

Eraser

Graph Paper

Students will learn how to calculate measurements and form a clear design that they will be able to build their game from.

See the attached idea sheets.

Wooden Games Day 2

Students will be given a piece of 20 mm thick pine (spruce) wood.
The student will use the palm/vibrating sander to make the piece of wood as smooth as possible.
Following their designs, students will carefully mark a piece of with the shape of their games.
The teacher will cut out the shape and give it back to the students so they can mark the wood for the holes they will drill for the game pieces.
The process for transferring the design to the piece is using a crayon to back color the design, much like carbon paper.
Students may begin to drill the holes for their pegs.

Wooden Games Day 3

Students will complete drilling the holes for the game pegs.
The students will sand the edges of their games using the disc sander
The final sanding of their game will be done with sanding blocks and sandpaper.
Students will paint or stain their games.

Wooden Games Day 4

Students will measure their game pieces
Students will cut their game pieces with a scroll saw or an arm saw
Students will sand the ends of their game pieces with sandpaper
Game pieces may be painted or stained.
Wooden Games will be assessed today

Grade 5 (project wrap up)

Students will have an opportunity during this lesson time to complete their projects with either paint or additional construction. There will also be several small holiday themed woodcraft projects available for students to create during this class if they have all of their games completed.
