Relationships and Change - Week 46 Lesson 3- Finding Percents of Amounts Using Calculators
Objective: Students will be able to calculate percents of amounts using calculators.
Lesson:
Start off with reviewing how to calculate the percent of amounts using the methods learned in the previous lesson.
Once the students feel comfortable, begin to show the students how to calculate percentages on a calculator.
To do this you turn the percent into a decimal and multiply it by the amount.
For example: 20% of 35
Convert 20% to .20
Multiply 35 x .20
Have students practice more conversions using the calculator using this worksheet:
Extension:
Begin to introduce percent on amount increase and decrease
In order to find Increase and Decrease by Percentages:
-First find the percentage of the original amount.
-If finding the increase, add the found percentage to the original amount.
-If finding the decrease, subtract the found percentage to the original amount.
Example problems can be found on Page 236-237 in the textbook.
