Objective: Students will be able to add and subtract negative and positive integers. 


In this lesson we will review how to add/subtract positive and negative integers and start to include more details such as when we add or subtract positive and negative numbers with double sign.

Adding and subtracting with a double sign means... 

  • + -     =  -

  •  -   +   =  -

  • + +  =  +

  • - -    =  +

Have the students copy this in their notebooks and ask if they notice any patterns.
When you have two of the same signs they make a positive
When you have two different signs they make a negative.

Examples: 
3  + ( - 5)
 - 4 - ( - 6 )
9 - ( + 4 )
12 - ( - 7)
10 - ( -3 + 8)
